Griffin’s View of J.W. Marriott in Grand Rapids, Michigan
$2000.00

This is an example of a custom artwork, about 3 feet by 4 feet. We can work in any size. Framing and shipping costs are additional.

Commissioned work for the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the first luxury J.W. in the Midwest and the second in the United States. Opened in September 2007.

Unframed size: 32 inches by 40 inches.

Medium: origami collage of folded Japanese papers.

The theme of the hotel, "Six Worlds. One Destination." honors the five sister cities of Grand Rapids in Japan, Italy, Poland, Ghana and Mexico.

The title of this work honors the Italian connection -- the sister city of Perugia, Umbria, Italy has as its city symbol the Griffin, a part eagle, part lion mythical creature that represents the wisdom of the skies and the strength of the land.

The center building in luxurious blue gold-gilted Japanese yuzen washi fabric paper is the J.W. Marriott. This invented origami in the shape of the J.W. is one piece of paper folded more than 100 times. The Japanese papers represent the richness of Omihachiman, a castle town whose merchants have supplied the shoguns and royalty for more than 400 years.
